22 Trampled to Death at Soccer Match
22 people have been killed in the Ivory Coast, after a stampede broke out at a World Cup qualifyer. 132 people were injured. The stampede began when fans began to push each other to get into the game.
Ivory Coast’s Interior Minister, Desire Tagro, said: “They started pushing to get in because the match was about to start and each and every one of them wanted to get in.” Police fired tear gas onto part of the crowd.
Stampedes are not uncommon at African soccer games. Their security forces are poorly equipped and unable to deal with the crowds effectively.
